Maturational

September 2nd, 2010 by admin

A second class of correspondences can be called experiential. I’ll mention three; very likely there are others, and very likely too each has been argued to be the “explanation” of the ritual of adventure. But let’s ignore from now on the empirical question of what the originators of the myths may in fact have consciously intended them to express; except as a historical datum, that question doesn’t seem especially important, and to take it too seriously may be a large-scale equivalent of the Intentional Fallacy in art criticism. The fact is that the Diurnal, Maturational, and Psychoanalytic “hypotheses” aren’t mutually exclusive, once we stop regarding them as hypotheses and think of them as correspondences — isomorphies — instead. They have in common their view of the heroic pattern as a dramatic emblem of ordinary human experience.

Thus, to take the first of them, what happens to the hero in his lifetime figures the daily adventure of all our psychic lives. Our rational consciousness cognizes, in common with other people’s rational consciousnesses, the sunlit, rigid, discrete forms of waking experience. In the individual subconscious these forms become, as in dreaming, self-luminous and fluid: We “wake” from the “unreality” of our conscious perceptions to dream through the twilit imagings of subconsciousness toward the province of deep, dreamless sleep — the place of dark, formless, unconscious, immediate knowledge. Day, twilight, night; consciousness, subconsciousness, unconsciousness; waking, dreaming, sleeping deeply; cognition, assimilation, immediate knowledge; being, becoming, not-being; life, half-life, death; discrete form, fluid form, formlessness — there are lots of ways to slice it. In each case, the geography is the geography of the psyche, and the adventure is our daily round.

honeymoon and stayed

‘And…Beryl’s? I will have Gregson down one day soon and go over the matter. It is time I brought my will up to date; it is full of anomalies and anachronisms…I have rather a fancy for the idea of installing Julia here; so beautiful this evening, my dear; so beautiful always; much, much more suitable.’

Shortly after this he sent to London for his solicitor, but, on the day he came, Lord Marchmain was suffering from an attack and would not see him. ‘Plenty of time,’ he said, between painful gasps for breath, ‘another day, when I am stronger,’ but the choice of his heir was constantly in his mind, and he referred often to the time when Julia and I should be married and in possession.

‘Do you think he really means to leave it to us?’ I asked Julia.

‘Yes, I think he does.’

‘But it’s monstrous for Bridey.’

‘Is it? I don’t think he cares much for the place. I do, you know. He and Beryl would be much more content in some little house somewhere.’ ‘You mean to accept it?’

‘Certainly. It’s papa’s to leave as he likes. I think you and I could be very happy here.’

It opened a prospect; the prospect one gained at the turn of the avenue, as I had first seen it with Sebastian, of the secluded valley, the lakes falling away one below the other, the old house in the foreground, the rest of the world abandoned and forgotten; a world of its own of peace and love and beauty; a soldier’s dream in a foreign bivouac; such a prospect perhaps as a high pinnacle of the temple afforded after the hungry days in the desert and the jackal-haunted nights. Need I reproach myself if sometimes I was taken by the vision?

The weeks of illness wore on and the life of the house kept pace with the faltering strength of the sick man. There were days when Lord Marchmain was dressed, when he stood at the window or moved on his valet’s arm from fire to fire through the rooms of the ground floor, when visitors came and went neighbours and people from the estate, men of business from London - parcels of new books were opened and discussed, a piano was moved into the Chinese drawing-room; once at the end of February, on a single, unexpected day of brilliant sunshine, he called for a car and got as far as the hall, had on his fur coat, and reached the front door. Then suddenly he lost interest in the drive, said ‘Not now. Later. One day in the summer,’ took his man’s arm again and was led back to his chair. Once he had the humour of changing his room and gave detailed orders for a move to the Painted Parlour; the chinoiserie, he said, disturbed his rest - he kept the lights full on at night - but again lost heart, countermanded everything, and kept his room.

On other days the house was hushed as he sat high in bed, propped by his pillows, with labouring breath; even then he wanted to have us round him; night or day he could not bear to be alone; when he could not speak his eyes followed us, and if anyone left the room he would look distressed, and Cara, sitting often for hours at a time by his side against the pillows with an arm in his, would say, ‘It’s all right, Alex, she’s coming back.’

Brideshead and his wife returned from their honeymoon and stayed a few nights; it was one of the bad times, and Lord Marchmain refused to have them near him. It was Beryl’s first visit, and she would have been unnatural if she had shown no curiosity about what had nearly been, and now again promised soon to be, her home. Beryl was natural enough, and surveyed the place fairly thoroughly in the days she was there. In the strange disorder caused by Lord Marchmain’s illness, it must have seemed capable of much improvement; she referred once or twice to the way in which establishments of similar size had been managed at various Government Houses she had visited. Brideshead took her visiting among the tenants by day, and in the evenings, she talked to me of painting, or to Cordelia of hospitals, or to Julia of clothes, with cheerful assurance. The shadow of betrayal, the knowledge of how precarious were their just expectations, was all one-sided. I was not easy with them; but that was no new thing to Brideshead; in the little circle of shyness in which he was used to move, my guilt passed unseen.

kind of narrative insurance

September 2nd, 2010 by admin

Scheherazade begins her first story: In all editions, it is The Tale of the Trader and the Genie. What she tells, in fact, on this first night, is half of her first story, to be continued, and half of the first of three subtales which will be framed by that first story: subtales narrated in turn by the characters in it. At the first sign of dawn she falls silent in mid-sentence, leaving not one but two plots suspended as a kind of narrative insurance. (Both plots, by the way, have to do with innocent victims under imperious and imminent threat of death, the first of whom, like Scheherazade herself, is playing for time by telling his would-be executioner a story! We are reminded for the 1001st time that “self-reflexivity” is as old as the narrative imagination.) Dunyazade now dutifully praises the tale thus far, as she has been instructed to do; Scheherazade shrugs off the praise with what will become a refrain of authorial self-deprecation — “What is this [compared] to what I could tell thee on the coming night, were I to live and the King would spare me?” — and Shahryar makes the fateful remark to himself which will become his dreadful, hope-giving refrain: “By Allah, I will not slay her, until I shall have heard the rest of her story.” We have speculated already what motives, beyond his pleasure in the young woman and her stories, might lie behind Shahryar’s new vow: As day dawns, it may well be dawning ever more clearly upon him that Scheherazade’s indirect plea for a stay of execution is his opportunity not only to save face but to save his political ass as well. We are not told;

The James Frey a million little pieces incident is one that I absolutely adore. Frey’s lies, well told to be sure, ended up embarrassing not only himself and his publishers, but the people - like Oprah Winfrey, to name the most famous of them - who praised him up and down for his ‘gritty and honest’ retelling of his life in the gutter.

For those who aren’t aware of the james frey a million little pieces affair, let me summarize for you. Frey was an entitled white kid from an upper-middle-class background. He wrote a book called “a million little pieces” which gained both fame and critical praise from people across the spectrum for his supposedly accurate portrayal of how someone with seemingly so much given to him can spurn it all for a life of drugs, drinks and depression.

The problem was, it wasn’t a true story. Frey may have taken a few bong hits here or blown a few lines there, but he was hardly the Robert Downey, Jr. character from “Less Than Zero.” He was, in short, a fraud.

Unfortunately for Oprah, but fortunately for both Frey and his bank account, nobody realized this until Frey had spent months on the best-seller list and gone on publicity and book tours promoting the james frey a million little pieces experience, as it was called.

I find the whole thing delightful as an example of style triumphing over substance and the media’s obsession with glorifying the least glamorous aspects of modern life. People looked at Frey after he was revealed to be a fraud and said “the emperor has no clothes,” but the reality is the whole thing showed that it’s the media who are the clothesless emperor in this situation. They don’t do their job, they don’t intend to. They’re in the business of building up and then tearing down celebrities, and Frey - he of the priviliged upbringing then drug-riddled teens and twenties - was a perfect hero for them.

Venezuela ‘helped Eta and Farc plot against Uribe’

July 13th, 2010 by admin

A Spanish judge has accused the Venezuelan government of assisting two rebel groups which plotted to kill Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe.
Judge Eloy Velasco charged six members of Basque separatist group Eta and seven members of Colombian rebel group Farc with various offences.
He said he believed Farc had asked for Eta’s help in a plot to kill Colombian officials in Spain, including Mr Uribe.
He said the two groups benefited from “Venezuelan government co-operation”.
In a 26-page indictment Mr Velasco said an investigation launched in 2008 has turned up evidence “that demonstrates Venezuelan governmental co-operation in the illicit collaboration between Farc and Eta”.
Both groups are listed as terrorist organisations by the US and EU.
The judge said Eta and Farc had been collaborating since 1993, and accused Arturo Cubillas Fontan of being a key link.
Mr Fontan lives in Venezuela and has held a job in the government of President Hugo Chavez – and may still have one – the judge wrote.
He is also a key member of Eta, running its operations in Venezuela and the region, Mr Velasco’s indictment said.
It said Mr Fontan “co-ordinated relations between Farc and Eta and the participation of Eta members in courses on explosives and urban guerrilla warfare”.
The judge charged Mr Fontan, along with two Farc members, Edgar Gustavo Navarro Morales and Victor Ramon Vargas Salazar, with conspiracy to commit terrorist murders.
His investigation found that Farc members travelled to Spain to try to kill former Colombian President Andres Pastrana and to stage an attack on the Colombian embassy.
A Farc member reported that “it would not be difficult to carry out an attack on those two targets as long as they could count on the help of Eta”, the indictment said.
